CHRISTIAN IDIOT – XVII MAN IN MASK - SANTA

 A good friend of mine posted two photos on the Facebook and called them “before and after dressing up as Santa clause.”  The Santa Clause mask did not just hide my friends but it destroyed his total personality. I am not sure if such a killer mask is necessary at all.

Believe me, the way we dress up Santa Clause in India is absurd. In India Santa does not sit in a mall and just pose for photographs with kids on his lap.  You pull a wornout crumpled red robe and a crushed pink mask out of a storage box, put it on a guy and drag him around for your carol rounds. That poor guy banking on his anonimity behind the mask shamelessly dances for all Christmas carols from “Silent night” to Indian Christian lyrics! Besides, he scares todlers at every house with his horrible mask and whiskers! Sometimes I wonder if we have reduced Santa Clause, very affectionately referred to in Tamil as “Christmas thatha(grandpa)” into a circus clown!  

When I was a little kid in Karur, my favorite Christmas father was Solomon Thatha. With his deep voice, bushy moustache and robust physique he was a lovable personality in 1950s. On the day of the Christmas tree function, he would appear in an immaculate white dress with a turban and would give us the Christmas gifts and great fun and joy. (Nobody worried about the absence of the white beard!) During the following few months, we would run after him calling out “Thatha, Thatha” to get an affectionate pat on the head!

 We usually celebrate the presence of the elderly in our churches and take efforts to honor them on special occasions. I think it is a good idea, though it sounds a little idiotic, to invite one of them as the chief guest of the Christmas tree function and make him the Santa Clause of this year. If that senior person is game for it, give him a slight make-up! But please….. pl..ea...se.. do not hide him with one of those pink mask with white beard. 

நான் ஒரு முட்டாளுங்க! - 17 முகமூடி தாத்தா!

எனது இனிய நண்பர் ஒருவர் முகநூலில் கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தா வேடம் போடுவதற்கு முன்னும் பின்னும் என்று இரண்டு ஃபொட்டொ போட்டிருந்தார்! முகமூடி போட்டவுடன் என் நண்பரை மட்டுமல்ல மனுஷனையே காணவில்லை. இப்படி விகாரமான கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தா முகமூடி தேவையா? 

என்னைக் கேட்டால் பெரும்பாலும் நம்ப ஊர் கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தா வடிவமைப்பு அபத்தம் என்றுதான் சொல்லுவேன். கடந்த பல பண்டிகையிலே பயன்படுத்தி ஒடுங்கிப்போன முகமூடியைப் போட்டு கசங்கின சிகப்பு அங்கியோடு ஒரு பையனை (அல்லது பெண்ணை) ரெடி பண்ணி கிறிஸ்மஸ் பவனிக்கும் கூட்டி வர்ராங்க. அந்த தாத்தா “ஒப்பில்லா திரு இரா…” பாட்டுக்கு “டுவிஸ்டு”ம் பெத்தலையில் பிறந்தவரை…” பாட்டுக்கு “குத்து”ம் அபத்தமா ஆடுவதோடு தனது கொடூரமான முகமூடிய காட்டி வீட்டிலே இருக்கும் குழந்தைகளை பயமுறுத்தி அழ வைச்சிட்டு போய்விடுவாரு. எனக்கென்னவோ பன்னீர் காவடி தூக்குகிற கூட்டத்திலே வருகிற கோமாளி மாதிரி நமது கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தா கேவலமயிட்டாரொன்னு தோணுது!

நான் சின்ன பையானா கரூரிலே இருக்கும் போது எனக்கு பிரியமான கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தா சாலமோன் தாத்தா தான். வளமான குரலும் அழகான மீசையும், கனமான உடல் கட்டும் கொண்ட அவர் 1950 களில் எங்க எல்லாருக்கும் எப்போதும் தாத்தா தான். கிறிஸ்மஸ் மரவிழாவிற்கு அவர் அழகான தலைப்பாகையுடன் வருவார். (தாடியைப் பற்றி யாரும் கவலைப் பட்டது இல்லை.)  எங்களுக்கெல்லாம் பெருத்த மகிழ்சிய்யும் சின்ன சின்ன பரிசுப் பொருட்களையும் தருவார். அடுத்து வரும் மாதங்களில் அவரைப் பார்த்தாலே “தாத்தா! தாத்தா!!” என்று அவரை சுற்றி சுற்றி வரத்தோன்றும்.

நமது சபையிலிருக்கிற முதியோரை கனப்படுத்த நாம் எப்பொழுதும் விரும்புகிறோம். முட்டாள்தனம் என்று நினைக்காட்டி, ஒரு சின்ன ஆலோசனை - நமது கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழாக்களில் ஒரு முதியவரை கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தாவாக கனப்படுத்தி சிறப்பு செய்தால் நல்லா இருக்கும்! அவரு விரும்பினார்னா கொஞ்சம் தாடி மீசை வையுங்க. ஆனா தயவுசெய்து முகமூடி போட்டு அழகான தாத்தா முகத்தை மூடிவிடாதீங்க.

CHRISTIAN IDIOT – XVI SUNDAY SCHOOL EXAMS!

Our daughter, Sheila is a gem of a child. She willingly helps me at home and takes good care of her little brother. She is remarkable in sharing with others and doesn’t picks up any quarrels. She is regular in reading the scriptures and says beautiful prayers. But she is not very smart in her studies. My husband and I do not mind that. But her class teacher has branded her as a “dull-head” and had nudged her to the last bench. Sheila was in tears one day when she told us that Mary, the daughter of a doctor, who gets the first mark in the class is the “teacher’s pet”. I pacified her saying, “You don’t have to worry about that; you are a darling child of Jesus.”

Do you know what happened last week? They had the Sunday school Examinations and naturally that smart child, Mary got the first prize. Poor Sheila broke down when she told me, “The darling child of Jesus is Mary, mummy, not me. Everybody in the church appreciated only her.”

Please tell me: Speaking about children, did not Jesus say, “Your Father in heaven does not want any of these little ones be lost.” (Mt. 18:14)? Why would this Sunday school then hold exams, give marks, give prizes to the smart ones and break the hearts of other kids like my little girl? The church should make every little child feel he or she is precious to Jesus. How can you in the church appreciate only the smart ones and leave the others out? Haven’t they suffered enough rejection in the day school?

I may sound idiotic but let me tell you, if the church seeks to develop Christian character and promote spiritual growth in children and make every one of them feel “I am a precious child of God”, please do away with exams and prize-giving in Sunday schools.

நான் ஒரு முட்டாளுங்க – 16 சண்டே ஸ்கூல் தேர்வுகள்

எங்க சரளா தங்கமான பொண்ணுங்க. முகம் கோணாம எனக்கு உதவி செய்வா; தம்பியை பொறுப்பா பத்துப்பா. மத்தவுங்களுக்கு பகிர்ந்து கொடுக்கிறதிலே அவ நம்பர் ஒண்ணு! யார்கிட்டயும் சண்டை போடமாட்டா. அழகா ஜெபம் பண்ணுவா ஒழுங்கா வேதம் வாசிப்பா. ஆனா பாருங்க அவ கொஞ்சம் மந்தம். அவ்வளவா படிப்பு வராது. நானும் அவ அப்பாவும் அதை பத்தி கவலைப்படுவதில்லை. ஆனா  அவ வகுப்பு டீச்சர் அவளை “மக்கு” பட்டம் கொடுத்து கடைசி பெஞ்சுக்கு தள்ளிட்டாங்க. முதல் மார்க் வாங்கும்  டாக்டரம்மா மகள் மேரி தான் டீச்சருக்கு “செல்லப் பிள்ளை”யாம்.  இதைச் சொல்லி கண் கலங்கிய சரளாகிட்டே, “ஏசு சுவாமிக்கு நீ செல்லப் பிள்ளைம்மா. ஆகையால கவலைப்படாதே” ன்னு சொல்லி அவளை சமாதானம் பண்ணி வெச்சிருந்தேன்.

ஆனா பாருங்க போனவாரம் ஞாயிறு பள்ளியிலே தேர்வு வச்சு பிள்ளைங்களுக்கு பரிசு கொடுத்திருக்காங்க. மேரிக்கு தான் முதல் பரிசு. அவதான் சமத்தாச்சே! சரளாதான் பாவம்; ரொம்பவும் சோர்ந்து போயிட்டா. “ஏசு சுவாமிக்குக் கூட மேரிதாம்மா செல்லப்பிள்ளை. அவளைதாம்மா கொவிலிலேயும் எல்லாரும் பாராட்டினாங்க.” என்று சொல்லி சரளா கண் கலங்கினா.

தெரியாமதான் கேட்கிறேன். இந்த சிறியரில் ஒருவனாகிலும் கெட்டுபோவது உங்கள் பிதாவின் சித்தமல்ல (லூக். 18:14) என்று ஏசு சாமி சொன்னாரே; சண்டே ஸ்கூலிலே பரிட்ஷை வைச்சு, மார்க்கு போட்டு, பரிசு கொடுத்து, எம்புள்ளை மனசை ஓடச்சு….. இதெல்லாம் தேவைங்களா? எல்லா பிள்ளைங்களும் சாமிக்கு பிரியமானவுங்க என்று சொல்ல வேண்டிய ஆலயத்திலே அறிவுள்ள பிள்ளைங்களை மட்டும் பாராட்டி பரிசு கொடுப்பது என்னங்க நியாயம்? அறிவிலே குறைவுபட்ட பிள்ளைகளுக்கு பள்ளியிலே கிடைக்கிற புறக்கணிப்பு பத்தாதா ஆலயத்திலும் புறக்கணிப்பா?

நான் சொல்லுவது முட்டாள்தனமா தோணலாம்: குழந்தைகளுடைய நல்ல குணங்களையும், ஆன்மீக வளர்ச்சியையும் பாராட்டி “எல்லாரும் ஏசுசாமி பிள்ளைங்க” என்று சண்டே ஸ்கூல் போதிக்கனும்னு நினைச்சிங்கனா, தயவுசெய்து பரிட்ஷை வைக்கிறதையும் பரிசு கொடுக்கிறதையும் ஓழிச்சுக் கட்டுங்க!

நான் ஒரு முட்டாளுங்க - 15 நான் இன்னமும் ஏன் கோயிலுக்கு போரேன்?

எனக்கு இளவயது. என்னைப் போன்ற இளைஞருக்கெல்லாம் திருச்சபை கமிட்டிகளில் இடமில்லைங்க. வேணும்னா நீங்களே லிஸ்டை எடுத்து பாருங்க; வாலிபர்கள் யாரும் இருக்கமாட்டங்க. ஆராதனையிலே ஏதாவது பங்கெடுக்கலாம்னா, வாலிபருக்கு வாய்ப்பில்லைங்க. வேதபாடம் வாசிக்க்க்கூட எங்க ஐயர் விடமாட்டாரு. எல்லா முக்கியமான பணியும் “மூப்பர்கள்” பொருப்பு! வாலிபர்களான நாங்க திருச்சபைக்குள்ளேயே ஓரங்கட்டப்பட்ட சிருபான்மைங்க! ஆனாலும் பாருங்க கோயிலை நான் விடமாட்டேங்க. எல்லா ஆராதனையிலும் பங்கெடுப்பேன். என்னை மாதிரி வாலிபருக்கு இந்த மாதிரி கோயில் ஆராதனையிலே பங்கெடுப்பது பயங்கர போருங்க. ஆனா, என்றைக்காவதும் மாற்றம் வரும்ங்கிர நம்ப்பிக்கையிலே இன்னமும் கோயிலுக்கு போய்கிட்டுதான் இருக்கேன். நான் சொல்லுவது முட்டாள்த்தனமா தோணலாம்; வேணும்னா பாருங்க என்றைக்காவதும் ஒருநாள் யாராவதும் ஒருத்தர், “வாலிபர்களும் சபைக்கு முக்கியமானவங்க” என்று கண்டுக்குவாங்க. 

CHRISTIAN IDIOT - XV  WHY I STILL HANG AROUND THE CHURCH?

I am young. Young people like me have no place in the church committees. Just check out the list and see for yourselves. You cannot find young persons among them. Nor do I have a chance to make any significant contribution during the worships either. Our minister does not invite me even to read the bible lessons during the worship. All the important duties are assigned to the ‘elders’. We are a marginalized group inside the congregation. However, I still hang around the church and attend services on all Sundays. It is dreary and dreadful for a young person like me to sit through the worship in our church. But I do it all the time hoping for a change! It may sound idiotic but someday somebody might recognize that we are a significant part of this community of God. 

CHRISTIAN IDIOT - 14 "THERUK KUTHTHU"

Our house is situated on a ‘T’ junction of roads and directly faces a road. Such a house plot that sits at the top of the road is called “Theru kuththu” in Tamil, (“Road hit” literally in English) and is considered inauspicious and susceptible to the influence of evil spirits. Many good friends warned us about this and one Christian friend very graciously suggested that we put up or at least paint a cross on our compound wall or gate and assured that the abiding presence of God will provide us all protection. A Hindu neighbor also persuaded us saying, “You see, sir, we place the image of Ganesh or an iron trident to ward-off evil spirits. As a Christian you may not like to do that; but like other Christians, put up your cross to protect your family. This is vasthu sasthra, just do it; everybody does it.”

It was only then I started looking around and noticed that most smart people who live in ‘road hit’ / ‘theru kuththu’ plots live hiding behind either a trident or a cross! I made a “Theru kuththu Christian’ friend to talk about the cross on his gate. He was shocked; but quickly pulled himself together and said, “He..He..We have placed the cross just to bear witness to the presence of Christians in this house.”

In the years past, Christians used to stand in street corners and preach the Gospel. Now a days, only the cross we place in the street corners bear witness. I wonder what the cross bear witness to? To the saving love of Christ who set us free from fears or to the superstition of Vaastu which binds us with fear? I have heard an old saying, “Not to fear the frightful is folly” I am a fearless idiot but a Christian idiot.

எங்க வீடு முச்சந்தியிலே தெருவைப் பார்த்தாமாதிரி அமைஞ்சிருக்கு. இப்படி இருக்கிற மனைக்கு “தெருக் குத்து” ன்னு பேருங்களாம். இங்கே கட்டின வீட்டிலே தீய சக்திகளின் “நடமாட்டம்” அதிகமாக இருக்கும்னு சொல்லுராங்க. நல்லெண்ணம் கொண்ட நண்பர்கள் பலர் இதைப்பற்றி எங்களை எச்சரித்தாங்க. ஒரு கிறிஸ்தவர் கனிவுடன் ஒரு ஆலோசனையும் சொன்னாருங்க: “உங்க வீட்டு கேட்டிலயாவது காம்போண்டு சுவத்திலாவது பளிச்சினு ஒரு சிலுவை வையுங்க; கர்த்தருடைய பாதுகாப்பு உங்க வீட்டிலே விலகாம இருக்கும்.” 

ஒரு இந்து நண்பர் சற்று வெளிப்படையாகவே எச்சரிப்பு விடுத்தார்: “நாங்க காபந்துக்காக பிள்ளையாரு (வினாயகர்) சிலை அல்லது வேல் கம்பு வைப்போம். நீங்க கிறிஸ்தவங்க அதெல்லாம் செய்ய மாட்டீங்; தெருவைப் பார்த்தாமாதிரி உங்க சிலுவையை வையுங்க, சார். காத்து கருப்பு ஒண்ணும் அண்டாது. இதெல்லாம் வாஸ்து சாஸ்திரப்படி அவசியம்ங்க; எல்லாரும் செய்யரதுதான், கூச்சப்படாம செய்யுங்க, சார்.” என்று சொன்னார்.

அதற்கு பிறகு கொஞ்சம் கவனித்து பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். “தெருக்குத்திலே” குடியிருக்கிற எல்லா அறிவாளிகளுமே வேலுக்கும் சிலுவைக்கும் பின்னாலே ஒளிஞ்சிகிட்டுதான் வாழ்கின்றாங்க. ஒரு “தெருக் குத்து” கிறிஸ்தவ நண்பரிடம் அவர் வீட்டு சிலுவைபற்றி லேசா பேச்சு கொடுத்தேன். அதிர்ந்து போன அவர் ஒரு செகண்டிலே சுதாரிச்சுகிட்டு, “ஹி… ஹி… இங்கே கிறிஸ்தவங்க குடியிருக்கிறாங்கனு சும்மா ஒரு சாட்சிக்கு தாங்க வைச்சிருக்கோம்.” என்றார்.

அந்த காலத்திலே கிறிஸ்தவங்க தெரு முக்கிலே நின்று சுவிசெஷ பிரசங்கம் பண்ணுவாங்க. இப்போ நம்ம வைச்ச சிலுவைதான் சாட்சி சொல்லுதுங்க! எதுக்கு சாட்சி சொல்லுது- கிறிஸ்துவாலே கண்ட மீட்புக்கா அல்லது வாஸ்துவாலே கொண்ட அச்சத்திற்கா,? “அஞ்சுவது அஞ்சாமை மடமை”னுவாங்க. எனக்கு அச்சமுமில்லே அறிவுமில்லே; நானொரு முட்டாளுங்க ஆனா கிறிஸ்தவ முட்டாளுங்க.

நான் ஒரு கிறிஸ்தவ புத்தகக் கடையில் ஒரு கிறிஸ்தவரல்லாத வாலிபரைப் பார்த்தேன். இந்தக் கடையில் இவருக்கு என்ன ஆர்வம் என்று பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். பக்தியுள்ள கிறிஸ்தவர்களின் வீட்டு சுவர்களை அலங்கரிக்கவென்றே எழுதப்பட்ட “துண்டு வசன” அட்டை ஒன்றை அவர் தெரிந்தெடுத்து, மெதுவாக கடைக்காரரிடம் வந்து, “அண்ணே, பொடி எழுதிலே “எபி.13:5” ன்னு எழுதியிருக்கே அது இல்லாம இந்த அட்டை கிடைக்குமா?” என்று ஒரு கேள்வி கேட்டார். “எதுக்கு அது இல்லாம வேனும்?” என்று கடைக்காரன் கடுகடுக்க, அந்த பையன் கொஞ்சம் வெக்கத்தோடே, “என் ஃப்ரெண்டுக்கு கொடுக்கனும்; நானே சொல்ராமாதிரி இருந்தா நல்லா இருக்கும்” என்றான்! “டேய் தம்பி, இது நீ உன் காதலிக்கு சொல்ர வார்த்தை இல்லேப்பா! கர்த்தர் “நான் உன்னை விட்டு விலகுவதுமில்லை; உன்னைக் கைவிடுவதுமில்லை” என்று நம்ம எல்லாருக்கும் சொல்லுர வசனமப்பா”  என்று கடைக்காரர் ஒரு போடு போட்டார்.

விவலியம் அறியாத வாலிபன் வசனத்தை விளங்கிக்கொள்ளாதது பரவாயில்லைங்க.  விசுவாசக்கூட்டத்தார் “வாக்குத்தத்த வசனம்” என்ற பெயரில் வேத வசனத்தைத் துண்டு போட்டு “வாக்குத்தத்த அட்டைகளை”  அச்சடித்து; அதற்கு பொருள் கொடுக்கிற மீதிவசனத்தை மறந்துட்டா எப்படிங்க?

எபிரேயர் 13:5 “நீங்கள் பண ஆசையில்லாதவர்களாய் நடந்து, உங்களுக்கு இருக்கிறவைகள் போதுமென்று எண்ணுங்கள்; நான் உன்னை விட்டு விலகுவதுமில்லை, உன்னைக் கைவிடுவதுமில்லை என்று அவர் சொல்லியிருக்கிறாரே”

  முழு வசனத்தையும் படிச்சு பாருங்க: பண ஆசை இல்லாமல், “இருக்கிறது போதும்” என்பவர்களுக்குதான் இந்த வாக்குத்தத்தம்!  எல்லாருக்குமில்லை! பண ஆசைக்காரனுக்கும், பேராசைக்காரனுக்கும் கை கொடுக்கவுமாட்டார்; விலகுவதில்லைன்னு வாக்கு கொடுக்கவுமாட்டார்.

வேதவசனத்தைத் துண்டுபோட்டு “இது கடவுள் எனக்குக் கொடுத்த வாக்குத்தத்தம்” என்று சொல்லும் விசுவாசிகளிடம் சொன்னா “அட போய்யா, நீ வெதத்தை பகுத்தறியத் தெரியாத முட்டாளு.” அப்படீங்கராங்க! முட்டாளா இருந்தாலும் கிறிஸ்தவனா இருப்பது முக்கியமில்லையா?

CHRISTIAN IDIOT – XIII   "PROMISES OF GOD"

There was this young man in a Christian book store. He was not a Christian. I wondered about his interest in this shop and watched him. He picked up a wall hanger. You know the kind of card boards with a ‘bit of a bible verse’ which sounds like a promise of God? It is very popular among ‘religious Christians’! He approached the sales man and asked, “Do you have a card with the same words but without the author’s name at the bottom which says, Hebrews 13:5?” When the shopkeeper asked why he wanted such a card, the boy explained, “I want to give this to my friend and I want this to appear as if I am saying it and not this guy, Mr. Hebrews.” The shopkeeper almost blew his top, and hissed at him, “Hi, These are not words of a lover boy to his girlfriend.” But he quickly gained control of himself and with the serenity of a self-righteous evangelist he spoke to him, “You see young man, these words, ‘I will never fail you nor forsake you.’ are God’s promise to all of us. It says that He is always there for every one of us”

It is quite alright for the non-Christian boy to misunderstand the use of scriptures. How can Christians misuse the scriptures by chopping off a part of a bible verse that sounds consoling and call it, “The promise of God” and forget about the rest of the verse which hold the key to understand that promise of God!

Hebrews 13:5 says, Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have; for He has said, “I will never fail you nor forsake you.”

Please read the verse as a whole. Only those who have learned to dislike money and to be contented with whatever little they have, can claim this promise. God does not promise His companionship and care to those care for prosperity rather than simplicity.

Christians who are well-versed in splitting the bible verses to pick out 'Promises of God' call me “an idiot without analytical understanding of the Holy Scriptures!”
